December 8th, 2011 is the 200th anniversary of Elizabeth Arnold Poe’s death. The Poe Museum in Richmond, VA commemmorated the event today with their usual flair. Have you not been to the Poe Museum? Worth a visit.
The mother of Edgar Allan Poe, Eliza (1787-1811) was a young actress who died only weeks before the Richmond Theater fire. She was a popular member of the Placide and Green troupe which was performing in Richmond that season. All but one of her cast members survived the blaze of December 26th, 2011. The Poe Museum’s collections include a script from a production in which she performed in 1809.
