Court End Christmas is right around the corner, and this is your chance to stop in to Monumental Church and see the gorgeous, historically-accurate paint job in the church’s interior. The church is usually only open by private appointment! Built as a memorial to the victims of the 1811 Richmond Theater fire, the Monumental Church was completed around 1814. It’s been painted stark white, been decked with Tiffany stained glass windows, and now in 2011 it’s returning to its roots, with plain glass windows, salmon walls, and gray trim. (You can see the stained glass and white/green interiors on the Historic Richmond Foundation site.) Shown is a photograph I took in November of 2011, after the renovations.
So come Sunday, December 11th, 2011 between 12 and 5. I’ll be speaking around 1:15 and 3:45. Right afterward is a performance about the Richmond Theater fire.
